Couchbase Capella or self-managed Couchbase: choosing for a Saudi workload

Couchbase Capella is Couchbase's fully managed database service. It runs on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, and Couchbase operates the clusters for you. Self-managed Couchbase Server runs on infrastructure you control, such as your own data centre in the Kingdom. As of 2 November 2026, Capella's published regions include Google Cloud's Dammam region (me-central2) in Saudi Arabia. Interkey, a Couchbase technology partner, sells Couchbase Capella and implements both models: we help you choose, then size, migrate and operate.

In short

  • Capella: Couchbase's managed service, billed per node per hour, in a region of the cloud you choose.
  • Self-managed: Couchbase Server on your own servers or cloud account, licensed by subscription per production node.
  • Region in the Kingdom: Capella lists Google Cloud me-central2 (Dammam), as of 2 November 2026. Other nearby regions are in the UAE and Bahrain.
  • Trying it: one free Capella operational cluster per organisation.
  • The deciding questions: where the data may live, who will run the cluster for years, and what the workload needs.
  • What Interkey does: sells Capella, and assesses, models, migrates and operates either model from Riyadh.

Couchbase Capella regions near and in the Kingdom

Couchbase publishes the regions Capella supports on each cloud. As of 2 November 2026, these are the ones in or near Saudi Arabia:

Couchbase's list does not mark me-central2 for the free tier, so a trial cluster there may not be possible. Check the current list before you decide, because regions are added over time.

Google states that customers with a Saudi billing address buy Google Cloud services for the Dammam region through its exclusive regional reseller. That rule is about buying Google Cloud directly. For a Capella cluster in Dammam, confirm with Couchbase, or through us, how it is provisioned and billed for your organisation.

What a region inside the Kingdom settles, and what it does not

A Capella cluster in Dammam keeps the cluster's data in a Saudi region. Before you treat that as the answer to a residency requirement, check these points with your compliance owner:

  • Backups. Where backups and snapshots are stored, and for how long.
  • Replication. Whether any cross-region replication (XDCR) is configured, and to where.
  • Connected services. Where App Services, monitoring and logs from the cluster are processed.
  • Access. Who outside your organisation can reach the data for support, and under which terms.
  • Your classification rules. Some data classes may still require infrastructure you operate yourself.

Where the rules say the data must sit on infrastructure you control, self-managed Couchbase Server is the model that fits. It also means someone must design, size, patch and upgrade the cluster for years. Plan for that before you choose it.

When Capella fits, and when self-managed fits

Couchbase Capella usually fits when:

  • the data may sit in a Capella region, including Dammam;
  • you would rather not hire or contract a team to run a distributed database;
  • you want to start small, scale per node and pay for what runs;
  • you are building mobile or edge apps that need App Services for sync.

Self-managed Couchbase Server usually fits when:

Read more
  • your rules require infrastructure you operate, in your own data centre;
  • you already run a mature on-premise platform team;
  • the workload must sit next to systems that cannot reach a public cloud region.

Either way, decide in this order: where the data may live, who will operate the cluster for five years, what the workload needs in latency, consistency and scale, and only then the plan, sizing and price.

How Couchbase Capella is billed

Capella is consumption-based: you pay per node per hour, and larger nodes cost more. You can buy prepaid credits that cover the Data, Query and Search services, and usage draws the balance down. Cluster disk storage is part of the hourly rate, while backups and data transfer are billed on top. You can buy Capella from Couchbase directly or through the marketplaces of the clouds it runs on. Couchbase's published rate card uses a US region as its reference, and rates differ by region.

Interkey sells Couchbase Capella, so one quote can cover the Capella credits, the plan and our implementation work. For self-managed Couchbase Server, the subscription is quoted alongside our work.

Moving an existing database to Capella

A common starting point is a relational database that now serves mobile apps, portals and analytics at once. A table-by-table copy of a relational schema into documents usually performs worse than the original, so the data is modelled for how it is read. During migration, data syncs continuously from the old system, usually with iblync, and reads move service by service before writes do. Cutover follows a rehearsed rollback. The same method applies whether the target is Capella or self-managed. See Interkey's Couchbase migration method.

How Interkey delivers Couchbase Capella

  1. Workload review.

    Access patterns, consistency needs, data volume, growth and the residency rules that apply.

  2. Model choice.

    Capella or self-managed, and for Capella the cloud, region and plan.

  3. Sizing and quote.

    Node sizes, availability zones, backup policy and the Capella credits to buy.

  4. Data modelling and migration.

    Documents designed for how the data is read, then a dual-run migration with a rehearsed cutover.

  5. Networking and access.

    Private networking, public access rules and database credentials.

  6. Operation.

    Monitoring, scaling, backup checks and support after go-live, from Riyadh, under a written scope.

Couchbase is an Interkey technology partner. The platform belongs to Couchbase. Interkey's engineers in Riyadh do the assessment, migration, tuning and operation, and work in Arabic and English.

Questions buyers ask

Is there a Couchbase Capella region in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. As of 2 November 2026, Couchbase lists Google Cloud me-central2 (Dammam) as a Capella region. Check Couchbase's current list before you decide.

Does a Dammam cluster make us compliant with data residency rules?

It keeps the cluster's data in a Saudi region. Whether that is enough depends on your data classification and on where backups, replication and connected services run. Your compliance owner decides.

Can we try Capella for free?

Yes. Each organisation can run one free Capella operational cluster. Couchbase's list does not mark the Dammam region for the free tier.

Is Capella cheaper than running Couchbase ourselves?

It depends on cluster size and on the cost of the people who would run a self-managed cluster. We compare both for your workload before you choose.

Does Interkey sell Couchbase Capella?

Yes. Interkey sells Couchbase Capella and implements and operates it, as well as self-managed Couchbase Server.

Next step

Ask which model fits your workload

Tell us what the database serves, roughly how much data it holds, and any rule about where the data must stay. We will reply with a recommendation between Capella and self-managed, and what the first step would be.
