Edge database: keeping data at the site when the link to the cloud is weak

An edge database stores and serves data where it is produced, on a device, a gateway or a server at the site, and exchanges changes with a central system when a connection is available. Couchbase offers this with Couchbase Lite for devices, Couchbase Edge Server for resource-constrained edge locations, and Sync Gateway or Capella App Services toward the cloud. Interkey is a Couchbase technology partner and sells Couchbase Capella; we review the workload before recommending anything.

In short

  • What it is: a database that runs at the edge, next to the people, machines and devices that use the data, instead of only in a central data centre or cloud.
  • Why: sites, factories and vehicles often have weak, slow or intermittent links. Local data keeps work going while the link is down.
  • Couchbase parts: Couchbase Lite on devices; Edge Server for resource-constrained edge locations; Sync Gateway or Capella App Services toward the cloud.
  • Who it is for: teams running remote sites, plants, field fleets and connected devices.
  • Check first: platform support and product status for your version, on Couchbase's pages.

Why data has to live at the edge

A system built on a central database assumes the link to it is always there and always fast. At a remote site, a plant floor or on a vehicle that is not true. Each break in the link stops whatever depends on the central database: a scan cannot be recorded, a machine reading cannot be stored, a worker cannot see today's job list.

An edge database moves the data to where it is used. Reads and writes happen locally, so work does not wait for the network, and changes travel to the centre when the link allows. The harder part is not storage. It is deciding what each site holds, how changes merge, and who may see what.

The edge tiers in a Couchbase design

Tiers of a Couchbase edge design, what runs in each, and what Couchbase states
TierWhat runs thereWhat Couchbase states
DeviceCouchbase Lite inside an app or on a deviceAn embedded NoSQL JSON document database for mobile and edge devices; stores, syncs and queries data locally, even without network connectivity
Edge locationCouchbase Edge ServerA lightweight standalone database for resource-constrained edge, based on Couchbase Lite Core. Couchbase gives its profile as a compact codebase of about 10 MB and typically under 50 MB of RAM. It can act as a sync server for local Couchbase Lite clients and as a sync client for upstream services
Sync layerSync Gateway or Capella App ServicesBi-directional sync between edge devices and the cloud, with access control through users, roles and channels
CentreCouchbase Server or CapellaThe central database that edge locations sync with

The resource figures above are Couchbase's own description of Edge Server, not a measurement of ours. Couchbase's pages do not state supported platforms or release status in the places we read, so confirm both for the version you plan to use.

How an edge location behaves when the link drops

Couchbase describes Edge Server as offline-first: it enables reliable data sync even in intermittent connectivity scenarios. It syncs with an upstream Sync Gateway or App Services over the WebSocket replication protocol, and it offers a REST interface, including CRUD operations and SQL++ queries, to any HTTP client.

On devices, the Couchbase Lite replicator goes offline on a temporary error and retries, with growing intervals between attempts; a continuous replication retries without limit. You can limit what each device pulls by channel, so a site holds only its own data. For conflicts, Couchbase Lite resolves them on pull: by default a deletion wins, otherwise the revision with the most revisions, and a custom resolver can apply your rule.

Questions to settle before choosing an edge database

  • What must keep working with no link? Reading, writing, or both, and for how long.
  • What does each site need to hold? The less data per site, the smaller the hardware and the sync.
  • Who may see which data? Channels and access rules are easier to design first than to add later.
  • What if two places change the same record? Pick the rule per record type with the business owners.
  • Where may the data live? An edge copy is a copy of the data. Treat it as in scope for your data classification rules.
  • Who looks after sites over time? Software on many remote locations needs updates and monitoring.

Not every remote site needs an edge database. If the link is dependable and the application tolerates a pause, a central database is simpler. Our SQL or NoSQL guide helps with the wider choice.

Where Interkey fits

Couchbase is an Interkey technology partner, and the platform is Couchbase's. Interkey sells Couchbase Capella, and as of 2 November 2026 Couchbase's region list shows App Services available in Google Cloud's Dammam region (me-central2); see our Capella page and check Couchbase's current list.

We begin with a workload review: sites, connectivity, what each holds, volumes and data rules. From it we can say whether an edge design fits, how it would sync to the centre, and whether the centre should be Capella or self-managed Couchbase Server.

Questions buyers ask

What is an edge database?

A database that runs near where data is produced and used, such as on a device or at a remote site, and exchanges changes with a central system when a connection exists.

What is Couchbase Edge Server?

Couchbase describes it as a lightweight standalone database for resource-constrained edge, based on Couchbase Lite Core. It can sync with upstream Sync Gateway or App Services and serve local Couchbase Lite clients.

How much memory does Edge Server need?

Couchbase describes a compact codebase of about 10 MB and typically under 50 MB of RAM. Those are its figures, so test them on your hardware and data.

Does it work with an unreliable link?

That is its purpose. Couchbase describes offline-first synchronization that works in intermittent connectivity, and Couchbase Lite retries when a connection drops.

Which platforms does it support?

Couchbase directs readers to its Supported Platforms and Compatibility pages. Confirm the versions for your hardware before you design around it.

Does Interkey sell Couchbase Capella?

Yes. Interkey sells Couchbase Capella and reviews, models, migrates and operates either Capella or self-managed Couchbase Server.

Tell us about the sites or devices, how weak the connection is, what each location must keep working, and any rule about where the data must stay. We will reply with whether an edge design fits and what the first step would be.
