What Is TRIR?

TRIR = (number of recordable incidents × 200,000) ÷ total hours worked.

The figure 200,000 represents roughly the hours worked by 100 people over a year; its only job is to make the resulting numbers comparable, not to carry any meaning of its own.

Worked example: 5 incidents across 800,000 hours worked gives TRIR = 1.25.

Whether an incident counts as recordable is a scope question that has to be settled before the rate means anything: a facility that applies a narrower definition of “recordable” than another will show a lower TRIR without necessarily having a safer site, simply because fewer of its incidents were counted in the first place.

TRIR can fall because fewer incidents actually happened, or because fewer of them were reported, or because the hours-worked figure in the denominator grew for reasons that have nothing to do with safety. The rate on its own does not distinguish between these, which is why it is read alongside leading indicators rather than in isolation.

Whether contractor hours are included in the total changes the number radically on a multi-contractor site: a TRIR calculated on the owner's own workforce hours alone can differ sharply from one calculated across everyone actually working on site, for the same set of incidents.

TRIR is a lagging indicator by construction. Continuous monitoring on cameras already installed adds leading-indicator context TRIR alone cannot supply, before an incident becomes part of next quarter's rate. Read about the platform.
