What is Work at Height?
Work at height is any work where a person could fall a distance capable of causing injury. It is not tied to a fixed number: a fall from a low ladder onto a hard surface, or into a floor opening, can be more dangerous than a fall from a greater height onto a fully protected surface.

Why it matters
Falls from height are among the most frequent causes of serious injury on industrial and construction sites, and the immediate cause is usually not a lack of equipment but the shortness of the task. Long jobs at height get planned and equipped with scaffolds and platforms; the task that takes minutes — changing a lamp, checking a valve, wiping a gauge — tends to be done with whatever is nearest.
The order of controls here is clear: prevent the fall first with barriers and protected platforms, then restrain it with systems that stop a person reaching the edge, and only then arrest it. A system that catches a fall after it starts is the last option rather than the first, because it operates once the person is already in the air.

High ambient temperature adds a further dimension to work at height here: heat stress reduces concentration and balance before its obvious symptoms appear, and working on an exposed surface in the middle of the day combines both hazards at once. Well-run sites therefore schedule height work into cooler hours wherever possible — not for comfort, but for error rate.
