Datadog alternatives: when to switch, and when not to

Interkey is a Datadog partner, so treat this page accordingly. It sets out where Datadog is genuinely the right answer and where organisations in Saudi Arabia are better served by something else: because a partner who only ever recommends one product is not much use during an evaluation.

Deciding factors, in the order they usually matter

The whole page in one table, before the detail.

Data residencyThe most common blocker in the Kingdom. Decide where telemetry may be stored before evaluating any tool
Cost modelPer-host plus per-custom-metric plus ingested logs. Log volume is what surprises people
Team sizeSelf-hosted stacks trade licence cost for engineer time; below a certain team size that is a bad trade
Existing estateHybrid and on-premise estates change the calculation against cloud-native-only tooling
Migration costInstrumentation and dashboards are portable in principle and expensive in practice

Credit where due

Where Datadog is the right choice

If your estate is largely cloud-hosted, your team is small enough that engineer time is more expensive than licence cost, and you have no constraint requiring telemetry to stay inside the Kingdom, Datadog is very hard to beat. The breadth of integrations means less time spent building collection and more spent using it, and a small team gets further with a managed platform than with a self-hosted stack somebody has to own.

Interkey implements Datadog for exactly these situations: instrumentation, dashboards and alert design. That work is described on the Datadog partnership page.

The other side

Where organisations here look elsewhere

01

Data residency

The most common reason, and it is usually decisive rather than a preference. If your obligations require telemetry to remain inside Saudi Arabia, the question is not which tool has better dashboards: it is which tools can run where you are permitted to put the data. That normally means a self-hosted stack on in-Kingdom infrastructure.

Settle this before the evaluation, not after. Logs in particular routinely contain more sensitive material than teams expect, and discovering that once agents are deployed is an expensive way to learn it.

02

Log volume economics

Datadog's pricing is comprehensible per host. Ingested log volume is where costs escalate unexpectedly, particularly for organisations with chatty legacy systems that nobody has tuned. Sometimes the answer is a different platform; often it is that the logging itself needs fixing, and switching tools would simply move the same bill.

03

Large hybrid and on-premise estates

Where most of the estate is on-premise and long-lived, the balance shifts. The value of a broad cloud integration catalogue falls, and the cost of per-host pricing across a large fixed fleet rises.

Decision order

What we would tell you to do

Answer residency first

It eliminates options rather than ranking them: the question is which tools can run where you are permitted to put the data.

Measure real log volume

Before pricing anything. Most estimates are wrong by a wide margin, and the number changes which platform is cheapest.

Check who owns the stack

A self-hosted stack needs someone who will own it for years, because that is the real cost of the licence saving.

Either way

The work is the same on any platform

If the answers point to Datadog, Interkey will implement it. If they point elsewhere, the observability work is the same on any platform: deciding what to watch, instrumenting for it, and designing alerts around consequence rather than threshold. That is the part that determines whether the investment pays off.

Buyer questions

What buyers ask us

Direct answers to the questions that come up in real evaluations. Anything missing, ask us at the bottom of the page.

You are a Datadog partner. Why publish this?

Because a partner who recommends one product regardless of the requirement is not useful during an evaluation. Data residency in particular rules Datadog out for some organisations here, and saying so is more valuable than pretending otherwise.

Can Datadog telemetry stay inside Saudi Arabia?

That depends on the region configuration and on your specific obligations, and it is a question to resolve with your compliance team before deployment rather than after. Where telemetry must remain in-Kingdom, a self-hosted stack on local infrastructure is usually the route.

What drives the cost more than anything?

Ingested log volume. Per-host pricing is predictable; log ingestion is where bills escalate. Measure your real volume before pricing any platform, and check whether the logging itself needs fixing first. The log cost guide works through what actually moves the number.

Next step

Talk through an observability decision

If you are mid-evaluation, say which options are on the table and what is driving the decision — the honest answer is sometimes that your current shortlist is right.
