What is a JSA (Job Safety Analysis)?

A job safety analysis breaks a specific job into its sequential steps, identifies what could cause harm at each step, and assigns a control to prevent it. It is also known as a job hazard analysis (JHA), and the idea is the same: looking at a task as a sequence of steps rather than as a single block.

01The difference

How it differs from a risk assessment

A risk assessment looks at an activity, an area or a process in general terms. A job safety analysis goes down to one specific task and walks through it step by step. A risk assessment answers: what are the risks of maintenance work in this section? A JSA answers: what could happen at step three of dismantling this pump?

The two are therefore used together rather than as alternatives: the assessment sets the broad picture and the priorities, while the analysis governs actual execution on the ground — particularly for non-routine tasks not covered by an existing written procedure.

02The process

How it is carried out — four steps

  1. Select the task

    Non-routine tasks, tasks with a history of incidents, or tasks being done this way for the first time.

  2. Break it into steps

    Realistic sequential steps — neither over-detailed into twenty, nor compressed into three.

  3. Identify the hazard at each step

    What could cause harm at this specific step, and to whom.

  4. Assign a control to each hazard

    Following the correct hierarchy, ending at personal protective equipment rather than starting there.

The condition that spoils a JSA when ignored: writing it at a desk. An analysis written by someone who has never performed the task describes the theoretical method and misses the steps the person actually adds in the field — which are usually where the real hazard sits.

In a Saudi context

On sites where contractors carry out non-routine work inside narrow time windows, a JSA sometimes becomes a form signed minutes before starting without being read. The difference between a site that benefits from it and one that holds it nominally shows in a single question: did the person who will actually perform the task take part in writing it?
